Reading Beyond Phonics

Each month, we'll post a fun reading challenge for you and your child to enjoy together at home. These challenges are purely for fun and to open your eyes to a whole world of books.

Everyone can love reading, they just need to find a book they love!

Why not set a target - how many of the challenges can you tick off through the year?

April's home reading challenge...read a non-fiction book.

Reading Intent

Our shared aim is to give all pupils the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life. Reading is prioritised to allow pupils to access the full curriculum that we offer at Rowley Lane. We want children to become fluent, independent readers in order for them to reach age related expectations or make accelerated progress from their starting point. It is our belief that reading should be pleasurable and fun and we encourage our pupils to develop a love of reading and for books.

Our reading curriculum is ambitious and engaging. It is planned using a wide and varied range of texts and genres, sequenced in a progressive way which also promotes a love of reading and allows all groups of children to have good quality teaching which meets their needs.

We are aspirational for all our pupils by creating opportunities and preparing every child for the next stage in their educational journey. Through developing confident and avid readers, we aim to ensure all pupils can access the curriculum well and make progress, adapting planning where necessary to suit the needs of every child so that they can reach their full potential.

Through reading, we aim to help our pupils to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Our aim is to create a buzz around reading and help our pupils to see that reading is fun for all!

Implementation

Reading checklists have been created by the Phase Leaders to support staff in decision making, planning next steps and to highlight strengths or areas to develop.

Subject leaders attend training to stay up to date with current initiatives. Staff meetings are held to ensure teacher subject knowledge stays strong.

Leaders pass on subject knowledge and recent research findings through staff training.

We direct Pupil Premium resources effectively to diminish the differences between our disadvantaged pupils compared to other pupils locally and nationally.

Ongoing formal and informal assessments take place to identify misconceptions and to address these swiftly.

Through formative and summative assessment, teachers regularly identify pupils who need extra support with fluency or comprehension skills. These pupils are given focused intervention either in small groups or on an individual basis.

Implementation of the curriculum is checked by SLT and subject leaders through observations, book sharing and discussions with staff.

Each year group has a class reader – these are carefully chosen, not only by taking into account the reading level of the children but with a view to engaging every pupil, capturing their interest and fostering their love for a variety of books.

Our pupils are heavily involved in choosing what goes onto our reading shelves. We allow each class to choose a selection of books, ensuring children have some ownership over what they are reading in school.

Much of our writing curriculum is linked to our reading. We use books as stimuli, taking inspiration for our writing units.

Exciting reading challenges are used to encourage the pupils to experience a wide variety of texts, encouraging them to develop and maintain a love of reading.

Our Year 6 pupils are responsible for running our school library which is well resourced with a range of books for everyone. Each year group has a designated library session in which they may visit and browse the library and borrow a book to take home.

In other areas of the curriculum, we provide plentiful opportunities for reading.

Progression is ensured through the use of recommended reads for each year group. Our class readers are based on this list and a range of books from the list are available on class bookshelves.

Through listening to our pupils read on a regular basis, we are able to provide reading material at an appropriate level for them to enjoy as personal/home readers.

Throughout the year, we hold special events to promote a love of reading such as, World Book Day, dress up days, quizzes and focused assemblies.

We have a group of Y6 pupils who are ‘READING ROCKSTARS.’ These pupils are responsible for promoting reading throughout school in a variety of ways: leading assemblies, as reading buddies for Y1 and Y2 pupils, inventing competitions, staffing the ‘Wheelie Good Book Nook’ at lunchtime and putting up reading displays.

"How can I help my child to read at home?"

That's the million dollar question! Have a look at the Book Trust website for some great ideas...

World Book Day Quiz 2024!

We were proud to take two teams of Year 6 children to the World Book Day Quiz at Huddersfield Town Hall. Both teams had the mammoth yet enjoyable task of reading 20 books to prepare for the quiz and both teams did brilliantly on the day with our Team A - Sebastian, Jacob, Dawud and Jordan - taking 1st place! Well done to both teams and especially our winners; we're very proud of you all.

Have you checked out our Rowley Lane Little Lending Library?

Studies show that children whose parents read at home are more likely to be readers themselves. How often does your child see you with your head in a book? Do you ever read your book alongside your child? Why not enjoy some reading time together?

Come and visit our Little Lending Library at the front of school. You can pick a book for yourself to borrow or, if you love it, keep it! We also accept donations of any pre-loved, adult books.

Let's love reading together!
