Music Curriculum Intent
|
“Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity” – The National Curriculum “The power of music: Music is all around us. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Music connects us through people and places in our ever-changing world. It is creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenging. In our schools, music can bring communities together through the shared endeavour of whole-school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and, through the love of listening to friends and fellow pupils, performing. The sheer joy of music making can feed the soul of a school community, enriching each student while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust which make a great school.” – The Model Music Curriculum Our intent: As a school, we intend to create an enjoyable and engaging experience of music for all children at Rowley Lane which will in turn help them to develop a love of music. By encouraging the children to learn to play a range of different instruments and perform in front of audiences, will develop their determination, self-confidence and give them a great sense of achievement. When performing, the children will have the knowledge and skill to read music on both a treble and bass clef. By the time the children leave Rowley Lane, they will have appreciated many different genres of music and have developed the ability to appraise and describe music when listening to it. They will have the opportunity to use all they have learnt from listening to music and perform by composing their own pieces which will increase their creativity. We aim to develop a music curriculum which will enable each child to be successful at reaching their full potential. |
Implementation
We have developed our curriculum map using the Model Music Curriculum as a bases. Learning is progressed through the following key areas:
- Singing
- Listening
- Composing
- Performing/Instrumental Performance
These all contribute towards the steadily increasing development of musicianship.
These areas are embedded in classroom activities and weekly singing assemblies. The children are also given the opportunity to be a part of music groups such as Glee singing club, hand chimes group and steel pan group where they will have the opportunity to perform to their peers and other audiences. The children are also given the opportunity to perform at the Kirklees Music Festival and the Young Voices concert.
Please see curriculum map for our schools implementation of music.
