Physical Education Curriculum

P.E. Curriculum Intent

The curriculum intent for physical education is to encourage children to develop a love and appreciation for physical activity, healthy living, and sport while providing them with opportunities to develop their physical skills and abilities. We aim to support pupils in understanding the importance of being physically active, promoting social interaction and teamwork through physical activity, and developing their resilience and confidence through challenging situations.

Our inclusive curriculum has been designed to allow all pupils the opportunity to experience and engage in a range of sports and activities, including swimming, gym, dance, athletics, and games. We encourage our pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of healthy lifestyles and the role physical activity plays in maintaining good health.

Our intention is to develop pupils' physical literacy through the acquisition of a range of fundamental movement skills, promoting coordination, balance, and agility. We encourage children to develop their physical capabilities, such as strength, speed, flexibility, and endurance to help them to feel confident in their abilities and improve their overall wellbeing.

We want our pupils to leave primary school with a solid foundation of leadership (through play leaders and School Sport Organising Crews (SSOC)), sportsmanship, knowledge about healthy lifestyles, and a passion for physical activity that will continue throughout their lives. By the end of our PE curriculum, learners should have the skills, understanding, and desire to engage in physical activity for a lifetime of health and wellbeing.

Implementation

At Rowley Lane, each child receives 2 hours of curriculum time PE on a weekly basis which is carefully planned and mapped out to ensure a broad and full range of skills and activities. Every year group receives at least one half term of P.E delivered by specialist coaches and teachers through our partnership with Schools Partnership in Newsome (SPIN) to work with teachers to enhance or extend current practice.

Children in Year 5 attend swimming lessons, where they are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25m using a range of strokes.

In addition to PE in curriculum time, we also strive to provide opportunities for children to access extracurricular physical activity through a wide range of sporting and active clubs at both KS1 and KS2.

In promoting active lifestyles, the 1K a day is embedded in our daily routine. Every child from Years 1 to 6, runs up to a kilometre at some point during each day in designated active time.

The expertise of the staff together with relevant resources, allows effective, ongoing assessment to inform next steps in learning and to ensure they can fulfil their P.E journey through school. Teachers check pupils understanding systematically, identify misconceptions accurately and provide clear direct feedback.

Teaching materials reflect the school’s ambitious intentions for our P.E curriculum. A variety of up to date materials and resources clearly support the intent of a coherently planned curriculum, with sufficient knowledge and skills for learning.
